On 15th January 2025 we had a social event at The Mildmay Club, Newington Green. Around 50 attendees enjoyed a wonderful evening exploring this highly nostalgic and rare example of a purpose-built working men’s club. Grade II listed in 2019 with a ‘dignified Queen Anne style frontage and largely intact plan form
It includes an impressive snooker hall with a bold painted scheme in Veronese and lime green with its *nine* tables from the early twentieth century. Beneath a distinct 1960s/70s decorative scheme, which is often used in film locations, there are high-quality original decorative finishes from the Edwardian period. Over the last 10 years the club has grown with a membership of c. 2,500 people who attend a diverse programme of events at what was once known as the Mildmay Radical Club. There is more information here.
We enjoyed several presentations about the history and architecture of the club, followed by tours of the iconic building, an opportunity to view their extensive archives. The evening wrapped up with drinks in the members bar. We look forward to revisiting during Hackney History Festival.
