This Victorian terraced house, by Macdonald Wright Architects, is situated within the Graham Road and Mapledene conservation area. It has been restored and remodelled to create a well-designed, simply expressed and flexible home for the changing needs of a growing family.

The brief was to create a dwelling with a high level of both design and sustainability. A palette of natural materials including copper, limestone and Douglas fir was chosen to reinforce the crafted aesthetic. Insulation, passive solar heating and grey water recycling help achieve a level of sustainability comparable to that of a new build home under 2010 Building Regulations.

The rear of the house was redesigned to incorporate a terrace, kitchen and dining space connecting the west-facing garden to the existing house. The simple box form of the extension clearly defines the new addition from the original building.

Booking recommended.
