Optimistic Architecture

TALK and BOOK LAUNCH on Thursday 10 June 2010, 6pm

To celebrate the Hackney Society’s new publication, Hackney – Modern, Restored, Forgotten, Ignored, three contributors take a walk through the post-war landscape of Hackney to discover three architectural gems: Haggerston School for Girls, Space Studios and the John Scott Health Centre. These buildings, while expressing an optimism for the future, now face very different fates. Space Studios, designed by Stillman and Eastwick-Field as a training centre for adults with learning disabilities, is sadly due for demolition, while Goldfinger’s Haggerston School for Girls and the John Scott Health Centre have recently been listed Grade II with the former currently being sympathetically refurbished by Avanti Architects.
