Shoreditch Furniture Trade

Ray Rogers will lead this walk in South Shoreditch. From the 1850s to the 1950s South Shoreditch was both the centre of production and the commercial heart of the English furniture trade as it underwent a transformation from a craft-based industry to one serving a mass market. The furniture trade evolved different types of buildings – for manufacturing, storage and distribution which, together with other important industries such as printing, produced a distinctive townscape grafted onto an older Georgian footprint. Today South Shoreditch is one of the best preserved of London's Victorian manufacturing districts and this walk will explore some of the history of the furniture trade as evidenced through its surviving buildings (also looking at some new architecture along the way).
