On Friday 20 September 2013, The Hackney Society launched the Love Local Landmarks - Hackney Building Catalogue website. The Hackney Building Catalogue is an online database of all of Hackney's Locally Listed buildings. It is the result of Love Local Landmarks - an exemplary project and collaboration between The Hackney Society, English Heritage, Hackney Council, Discover Hackney and many local volunteers to update and extend the borough's local list through crowd-sourcing and to provide other local authorities with the impetus to do the same.

The following is an extract from English Heritage’s forthcoming Historic Environment Local Management (HELM) Newsletter

Love Local Landmarks, The Hackney Society

The Hackney Society has created a publicly available database of Locally Listed Buildings across the borough. Each entry contains a short local list description, a photograph and a map location and will be added to the Greater London Historic Environment Record.

The website is the product of a community-led campaign to review and update Hackney Council’s Local List. Local volunteers, managed by an architectural historian, were trained to survey the  borough’s streets and spaces, put forward nominations and write new entries. As a result of the survey over 100 new additions were made to the list, and several buildings may be put forward for  statutory listing.

The website contains a tool kit aimed at local groups and planning authorities wishing to pursue similar projects. The tool kit includes tips on defining the scope of the project, best practice in  identifying and training volunteers; and sample survey sheets and list entries.

The Love Local Landmarks campaign was part-funded by English Heritage, the London Borough of Hackney and local heritage organisations.
